About the Author
Jake Harwood (Ph.D. & M.A., University of California, Santa Barbara; B.S., University of Bristol) is an Associate Professor of Communication and chair of the interdisciplinary graduate program in Gerontology at the University of Arizona.; His research focuses on intergroup communication with a particular focus on age groups.; He is interested in the ways in which cognitive (e.g., stereotypes) and societal (e.g., mass media) representations of groups relate to communication processes. Currently, this research focuses particularly on grandparent-grandchild relationships and the ways in which those relationships are influenced by attitudes concerning aging. ;His research draws on theories of social identity, intergroup behavior, and communication accommodation.; He has published more than 50 articles in professional journals, including the Journal of Communication, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Communication Studies, and Communication Monographs.; He is book review editor for the Journal of Language and Social Psychology and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Communication Education, and Communication Studies. He is a past chair of the Instructional and Developmental Communication Division of the International Communication Association.
