This is a terrifically interesting and entertaining book, which presented me with at least two blockbuster ideas that changed the way I think about the past. I'll get to those in a minute, but first a few general points. Charles Mann is a science journalist:who seems to specialize in BIG topics. His 2005 book ("1491", which argues that the pre-Columbian population of the Americas was much larger and more sophisticated than generally assumed), was very well received. I enjoyed it so much, and thought it so valuable a book, that I was very anxious to read "1493"."1493" lived up to my (high) expectations. Mann is remarkable writer, with an extraordinary ability to present very complex facts and ideas in way that's not just accessible to the lay reader, it's fun for the lay reader. This isn't to say that the book isn't carefully researched -- the text is followed by almost 100 pages of footnotes, and throughout he cites and acknowledges the scientists and others from whom he has drawn information. It's just that Mann manages to combine a myriad of facts and hypotheses into a compelling narrative. And he often puts this in very concrete terms, focussing on individual people, commodities or events. It adds up to a fascinating read.It is also a very important one, with implications for the future as well as about the past. Mann's subject in this book is the Columbian Exchange, the sudden movement of plants, microbes, animals and people between the eastern and western hemispheres after Columbus' voyage to the Americas in 1492. A well known effect of this was the eastern hemisphere adoption of western hemisphere foods (tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate, coffee, and on and on). Another effect that's only been recently come to be widely understood is the devastating impact on the pre-Columbian population of the Americas; as many as 80% died in the epidemics that followed the introduction of diseases to which they had no immunity. But the population die-off and the exchange of plant species are not the only effects of the Columbian Exchange. Mann's book explores the myriad ways in which the Exchange -- globablization -- has shaped the world of today.Two things I learned from the book struck me particularly. First, like most Americans of my generation (older) I learned in school that the colonization of the Americas was carried out by white people, who moved into a largely uninhabited continent. "1491" took care of the uninhabited: "1493" takes care of the white. Mann says that from 1500 to 1840, about 3.4 million white Europeans emigrated to the Americas. Over the same period, about 11.7 million captive Africans were sent to the Americas. Except for New England, much of the United States and most of Latin American was far more black than white. (And probably in 1840 still more Indian/Native American than anything else). The racial balance changed as white immigration ramped up and as millions upon millions of blacks died too young, but the picture of early America looks very different to me now.Secondly, Mann discussed at length the 19th century ecological disaster that engulfed China. I had always assumed that the floods that killed so many millions in China had always happened, and were the result of geography. There have indeed always been floods, but their severity and human cost grew logarithmically in the 19th century. New crops led to more food and to rising population growth, and at the same time to more potential cash crops, increasing the pressure on existing land holdings, and leading to vast land clearances. That made the floods far worse when they came, undermining the political structure and compounding China's problems. After his best-selling book, 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus, Charles Mann wrote a sequel, 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created.1491 reconstructs what North and South America were like before European contact, showing that the Americas were among the most densely populated regions of the world. Some of the cities in Mesoamerica and South America were bigger and more sophisticated than Europe’s most advanced cities at the time.1493 chronicles global changes resulting from the interaction between continents, what Mann calls the Homogenocene, rewriting global ecosystems through the transportation of immigrants, slaves, new crop plants, livestock, pests, and diseases. Mann shows how malaria imported from Africa shaped colonies and influenced slavery in the New World, and how African colonization was often a bigger force in reshaping the Americas than European colonization. He shows how exploited riches of gold and silver sparked global trade networks and enriched some, but also flooded the markets with such vast wealth as to devalue precious metals and cause economic collapse instead of prosperity. Mann follows the trail of American crops that were introduced to the rest of the world, such as potatoes, tomatoes, maize, sweet potatoes, and rubber, showing how American foods helped stabilize and grow European populations, fueling global empire-building, and of course, crashes such as the Irish potato famine. From Asia to the Americas to Europe, Mann demonstrates how the discovery of the Americas reshaped the entire world, for better or worse, into a more homogenous mix of people, crops, and pests. It is a great read for understanding world history and the roots of globalization.

I am enjoying this book as an amateur history of spices buff. It is an eye opener for making one realize how isolated people were pre-Columbus and the effects of his exploration on opening up trade and culinary experiences around the world. It is fascinating learning out crops today that are important economic contributors to various countries were acquired post-Columbus. Rubber is a case in point. From South America to the vast planations of SE Asia. Red peppers, the basis for many Thai and Chinese dishes were unheard of in these countries pre-Columbia.Some of these migrations were good, some was bad. Mr. Mann covers both sides of the story in a readable book.

It is rare that an author has the talent to impart facts, attendant theories, and well researched history without putting his readers to sleep; Charles C. Mann is such an author and "1493" is such a book.Taking up where his earlier work, "1491", left off, Mann's continued historical explanation and analysis of the so called "Columbian Exchange" does much to inform his reader of when and how human caused globalization began to impact the western hemisphere and change Earth's ecosystems forever after. The exchange of plants, animals, viruses, bacteria, minerals and, perhaps most earth-shaking, human beings falls into an epoch that Mann labels the "Homogenocene", an era that continues to affect our world and its environments. This book - like 1491 - is well researched, well argued when Mann tilts toward theories of causation, and very well written overall. Two thumbs up! Or five stars even!

A very interesting read. I have always been interested in how foods or inventions are integrated into different cultures and how they affect civilizations. This is a well researched and well written documentation of the changes which occurred when the two worlds met after 1492. Very enjoyable. I bought the kindle version, as usual with books that you want to glance back through, it would be interesting to have a hard copy.

Anthony Trewavas, Emeritus Professor, University of Edinburgh, FRS

Anthony Trewavas obtained his B.Sc and Ph.D from University College, London in Biochemistry and went to do post doctoral research at the University of East Anglia and the University of Edinburgh, where he became Professor of Plant Biochemistry, as well as undertaking numerous visiting professorships abroad. He has published 250 papers and two books, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Academia Europea and has been elected as a Life Member of the American Society of Plant Biology.

Without going chapter by chapter, I think Steven Hyden did a good job of using musical and cultural comparisons as an entry point to discuss how we behave in so many other ways.For example, Oasis and Blur he uses to say that when he was growing up, you couldn't like both - if you liked Oasis, you must not like Blur. I think that's fair, especially when we're young and we're trying to create our "identity." This is equally applicable to real life - it seems like you can't "like" open carry gun laws and also "like" pro-choice - even though the two have nothing to do with each other, the beliefs are mutually exclusive. Our identities are restricted to a certain beliefs and we behave like they can't overlap.When he talks about the "culture wars" of songs, he used "Southern Man" and "Sweet Home Alabama" as a good example - he claims (and I'm not sure I buy this) that "Alabama" was written as a joke, almost, not a serious pro-south anthem. But that was in 1975 - in 2016, there's no irony to that song and it's as straightforward as it comes. The culture decided that the song represented a simple statement, regardless of what the artist did or didn't intend.There's lot of relevant examples, and cogent analysis. I want to try and use this in a college classroom setting as examples of how our relationship with music speaks to and mimics our real-life personalities. It is very 1990s specific, however, and most college students would only be vaguely familiar with many of these artists. So it's a potentially good resource, but maybe not ideal for audiences younger than about 30.

It isn’t often that a book greatly exceeds the expectations I had going into it. Mr. Hyden’s look at pop music rivalries is one. I wasn’t sure that I would even like this book since my interest in pop music is relatively minor and, besides Beatles vs. Stones, I wasn’t really much aware of any of these other rivalries. I thought, at best, this book would be a humor-filled romp through recent music history. It is that, but it turned out to be more. Mr. Hyden was able to use these rivalries as a starting point for larger commentary about our society.For example, he uses the Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West controversy epitomized by West’s interruption of Swift’s 2009 VMA award acceptance speech to explore the meaning of awards and why some people/music/movies/etc. are more likely to win awards than others. He uses Clapton vs. Hendrix to discuss how “survivors can’t help but pale in comparison to dead people” (p. 121). He describes how Neil Young vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a non-rivalry to discuss how music and fame is often co-opted by people who want to use it for their own purpose often very disconnected from the source material.This book was more than just a pleasant surprise for me. It is a book that delivers much more than the promise of its premise. It is a book that comments well on the current state of our society in a pleasurable way. It has become one of my favorite recent reads.

I bought this expecting a fun, light "beach read" for a recent vacation-- it is NOT. Mildly interesting in some parts, but-- unless you're a true "rock music or popular culture HISTORIAN" like the author-- you will need to have Google or Wikipedia handy if you want to understand much of what he is saying. It's peppered throughout with references to other, far lesser-known individuals; if you don't know who they are then you cannot "get" the author's point! Here's an example (pg. 228): "[Cyndi] Lauper was like Lesley Gore multiplied by Lydia Lunch plus one-eighth of Rowdy Roddy Piper." This highly-ANNOYING, pedantic writing style makes it a far less enjoyable read than the title suggests.

Hyden does a great job of using the notions we attach to our ideas of ourselves and how that relates to our music choices. Hyden doesn't really takes sides, with the exception of Oasis vs. Blur, but examines the sociologies associate with some of the trivialities of those arguments. A great exploration of the human condition.

Hyden is not interested in score settling or contending for TMZ. In "Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me" he strips the mythology away from some of music’s greatest rivalries/feuds and focuses on the far more relatable and enduring human elements. Patience is at times required of the reader as Hyden often goes on personal tangents with varying degrees of fulfillment towards the larger point he is trying to make. But ultimately I saw endearment in his quirky writing style that and was willing to go along on his layered journey. The reader will find themselves thinking of even the most tired debates (Beatles vs. Stones, Prince vs. Michael Jackson) in new ways that go far beyond who’s music is superior. The irony is that by, for the most part, not choosing sides, Hyden points out their futility and by doing so may have settled them all anyway.

Once I locked in I breezed through because I really enjoyed the walk down (in many cases) memory lane. But Hyden moves beyond simple sentimentality and stereotypical face-offs to make some really great points that left me thinking even after I turned the last page. Not bad for a pop music memoir, eh?

I enjoyed this book. It is a good beach read. You can pick it up, read a few chapters, and not read it again for a week, and not miss a beat. I like Steven's comparisons and insight into some high profile feuds.

For music fans, this book is a must. Hyden expertly explores not only the rivalries but the personal parallels associated with them. His anecdotes are consistently hilarious and insightful. This is a must for any music fan; it's fascinating and well-written.

As a person charged with organizational change at our college (the largest two year technical college in the US, with over seventy thousand students, more than three thousand employees, four campuses, two public television stations, three unions and an annual budget of over 207 million dollars a year), I am always looking for ways to get our employees to see a clearer picture.

We have been using "Teeter Totter" as part of our leadership effectiveness training and have noticed several things. First, of course, is the expected "you want us to what?" and the "this won't take more than five minutes" responses. Second, we see a lot of conscious effort on the part of the teams to actually make the exercise work. Third, we have seen some real glimpses of learning. When using this exercise with our campus leadership teams, I noticed an increase in understanding of the dynamics at play. As team members gingerly stepped onto the board, the member who was acting as the coach for the team kept saying "don't just look at where your opposite is on the board, feel where he or she is. Feel the board, feel your contact with the board, feel the other member and what they are feeling." In the de-brief, the conversation turned quickly to how we can understand what the other members on our team are going through during their daily jobs.

Your Systems Thinking Playbook has become a bible to me! What is so wonderful about these exercises is that the point you're trying to make is immediately obvious to everyone; there's no need to explain what participants were supposed to have learned. Linda Booth Sweeney, Ed. D., is an educator, researcher and writer dedicated to helping people of all ages integrate an understanding of complex, living systems into learning, decision making and design.  She has worked with Outward Bound, MIT's Sloan School of Management, and Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development (SEED). She is the author of The Systems Thinking Playbook; When a Butterfly Sneezes: A Guide for Helping Children Explore Interconnections in Our World Through Favorite Stories; Connected Wisdom: Living Stories about Living Systems; and numerous academic journals and newsletters. Dennis Meadows is emeritus professor of systems policy and social science research at the University of New Hampshire, where he was also director of the Institute for Policy and Social Science Research. In 2009 he received the Japan Prize for his contributions to world peace and sustainable development. He has authored ten books and numerous educational games, which have been translated into more than 15 languages for use around the world. He earned his Ph.D. in Management from MIT, where he previously served on the faculty, and has received four honorary doctorates for his contributions to environmental education.
